Dental crowns are used extensively in dentistry as both a restorative and cosmetic treatment. Learning more about the teeth crown procedure can help you feel more comfortable with this treatment. Through the following FAQS, Drs. K Favero and Stephen Blake Favero from Favero Family Dental in Denton, Texas, provide greater insight into dental crowns and their use. Our practice serves residents in Krum, TX, as well.
Crowns are tooth-shaped caps cemented over vulnerable or compromised teeth for strength, protection, and support. A crown will cover your entire tooth, all the way to the gum line. Crowning a weak or compromised tooth makes it strong again so it can continue to be used.
Ceramic and porcelain crowns are the most popular types of crowns as they look just like natural teeth. Crowns can also be made of metal alloys like gold and nickel, or porcelain fused to metal for added strength. Different materials are used for crowns to suit different dental needs.
Crowns can be used for various purposes in dentistry, such as:
We may also crown an oddly sized or misshapen tooth to make your smile more uniform and pleasing.
We’ll start by examining your tooth to determine if a crown is needed. If so, we’ll prep your tooth for a crown by reshaping its structure. This makes it easier to place your crown. Once your tooth is prepped, a mold is made of your tooth and nearby teeth to get precise measurements for your crown. This mold is sent to a lab where custom crowns are fabricated. In the meantime, we’ll protect your prepped tooth with a temporary crown. When your permanent crown is ready, we’ll cement it in place to complete your procedure.
That depends on the type of crown used, how it’s used, and how well you care for your tooth. Metal crowns can generally last a lifetime. Porcelain, ceramic, and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns can have a lifespan of 10 – 15 years, with good oral care.
We recommend crowning vulnerable or compromised teeth to restore their usefulness for the future. You’ll have strong, healthy teeth for eating, smiling, and speaking for years to come. Otherwise, these teeth will continue to deteriorate to the point where they eventually must be removed. Crowns help avoid premature tooth loss and preserve your natural smile.
